This seminar, facilitated by Anne Taylor, LCSW, Psychoanalyst, is designed for mental health professionals and graduate-level counseling students seeking to deepen their understanding of patients who present with borderline-level personality organization and their associated interpersonal and affective difficulties. The seminar will examine characteristic patterns of functioning, including difficulties with affect regulation, interpersonal relationships, identity, and the therapeutic relationship, with particular attention to transference and countertransference dynamics.
The seminar will introduce a psychodynamic framework for understanding borderline-level functioning and will consider how clinicians can use this framework to assess clinical presentation, understand relational dynamics, and respond therapeutically to common challenges in treatment. These concepts will be applied to two clinical case examples representing differing levels of severity, allowing participants to consider how the patient's level of functioning and relational dynamics may inform clinical formulation and therapeutic response. Participants will read and discuss the paper, “Thinking about Thinking: Some Clinical and Theoretical Considerations in the Treatment of a Borderline Patient,” by Peter Fonagy.

Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this seminar, participants will be able to:
Describe at least three characteristic features of borderline-level personality functioning and explain their relevance to clinical assessment and treatment.
Identify and describe common transference and countertransference dynamics that may arise in the treatment of patients with borderline-level functioning.
Apply a psychodynamic framework to clinical case material to formulate borderline-level functioning and identify appropriate therapeutic responses to the interpersonal and affective challenges presented in treatment.
