Addiction: A Modern Psychoanalytic Approach

Overview

Addiction has long been deeply misunderstood in both our culture and clinical practice. Rather than being a reflection of impulsivity or self-destructiveness, or a result of genetic or physical factors, addiction can be shown to be a psychological symptom that is identical to those symptoms we call “compulsions.” Accordingly, they are best treated psychodynamically.

Learning Objectives

1. Describe and apply the relationship of addictions and compulsions.
2. Describe the relative roles of physical and psychological factors in addiction
