IPI Indy provides Indianapolis-area clinicians pursuing continued development in psychoanalytic psychotherapy with opportunities to build supportive community through events, groups, and local engagement.
IPI Indy History
IPI Indy started with Pat Hedegard’s desire to learn more as a therapist, which took her to IPI in Bethesda, MD. Pat had no idea what she was beginning and what would be involved. In 2003, Pat found her professional community at IPI and wanted to bring this home to Indianapolis. Pat started telling her colleagues and friends about IPI. Through Pat’s encouragement, Jackie Montrie, Sue Cebulko, Carla Trusty-Smith and Anne Taylor followed suit and joined the 2-year Core Program (2007-2009). As fate or luck would have it, Pat was handed the equipment to join IPI’s precursor to the Master Speakers Series on video which met monthly in Pat’s home for two years. The video series moved to Carla’s office where she hosted the Friday Master Speakers series and the Wednesday Foundations in Couple and Family. These video series occurred in person and there were discussion groups afterwards. This was the only way the programing could come to Indy prior to Zoom.
It was at an IPI weekend in Panama in 2009, that Pat, Jackie, Sue, Carla and Anne first conceived the possibility of a local chapter of IPI in Indianapolis. There was excitement and anxiety about this new venture. There was no way to access IPI national without creating a bridge outside of the weekends. In this way we could bring the resources of IPI to Indianapolis. There were several people along the way who coached and mentored us in forming a chapter, group process, and teaching including Janine Wanlass and Stan Tsigounis. We used the values of IPI and GAM processes to work through the natural challenges of building a local community.
The first class started in Indy was September of 2010. It was the Introduction to Object Relations Theory. We began a series of annual one day conferences which included: David Scharff, Jill Scharff, Jane Hall, Jack Lindy, Janine Wanlass, Charles Ashbach, Nancy McWilliams, Dennis Shelby, Phil Flores and Otto Kernberg. Up until March 2020 we had monthly IPI Indy classes.
The faculty met monthly and had an annual retreat to plan the coming year. We had 2 semesters of study groups per year. We rotated teaching and leadership for those classes. We took turns being chair of IPI Indy so that someone could hold the center of the chapter in mind. The role of chair was held for 2-4 years.
To manage the complexities of forming a local chapter, we distributed the tasks among the faculty of 5 to include: incorporation, banking, web site, video seminars, managing the email list, insurance and filing taxes.
Our legacy and success is represented by the current faculty and participants of IPI Indy who are giving back locally and nationally. We have faith and confidence that the torchwill be carried by the current generation.
This history is gathered in collaboration by IPI Indy Founders: Pat Hedegard, Anne Taylor, Carla Trusty-Smith and Sue Cebulko, August 2025
